Dorchester United Church

Wherever you are, whoever you are,

Join us in our Journey!

WE GATHER TO PRAISE GOD

MUSIC PRELUDE

TO PONDER: Consider the word blessing. How does God bless us? How has God blessed you?

INTROIT: "How Deep the Peace" M.V. 95

(Choir sings once, then congregation)

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP:

For God so loved the world, that God created it, and us!

For God so loved the world, that God gave us Jesus, the Christ.

For God so loved the world, that God does not condemn, but heals; does not destroy, but saves.

For God so loved the world, for God so LOVES the world. Now and always.

Let us worship our God, who loves us, and loves all.

HYMN: "In the Bulb there is a Flower" V.U. 703

OPENING PRAYER (in unison)

Loving God, we come into your presence today to receive your word, feel your presence, and ready ourselves to be your servants in the world. Some of us come needing to forgive another, others come needing to be forgiven. Some of us need both. We all come knowing that you alone can infuse us with the peace and grace to both give and receive forgiveness, because you have first forgiven us. Be with us now in our worship. Amen.

HYMN: "Will you Come and Follow Me?" V.U. 567

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN:

SERVICE OF LIGHTING THE CANDLE:

Almighty God, we are looking for you. May this candlelight remind us that you are here with us, as we worship you this day, and may we remember that you are always near, just a prayer away. Amen.

ANTHEM:

WE HEAR GOD'S LOVING WORD FOR US

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION:

Gracious God, you gave us this earth as a garden, and you give us choices every day, between good and evil, life and death. Be with us now as we ask for your Spirit of wisdom, to help us understand your will for us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING: Genesis 12: 1-4a

This is the witness of the People of Israel.

Thanks be to God.

RESPONSIVE PSALM: Psalm 121 (V.U. 842)

GOSPEL READING: John 3: 1-17

This is the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God.

HYMN: "Hope of Abraham and Sarah" M.V. 148

VIDEO: A Message from our Moderator, Jordan Cantwell:

"For Jesus, love of God and love of neighbour are inseparable."

MESSAGE: "Spiritual Growth and Blessing"

RESPONSE: V.U. 400 Lord, listen to your children praying,

Lord, send your Spirit in this place,

Lord, listen to your children praying,

Send us love, send us power, send us grace.

WE RESPOND TO GOD'S WORD IN FAITH AND ACTION

PASTORAL PRAYER:

OFFERING INVITATION: The Bible speaks of sacrificial giving, and to that kind of giving we are called. In these Lenten days, let us offer not only our monetary gifts, but ourselves, into the hands of the one who gave himself for us.

OFFERTORY RESPONSE: For the gift of creation, the gift of your love, and the gift of the Spirit by which we live, we thank you and give you the fruit of our hands. May your grace be proclaimed by the gifts that we give. V.U. 538

OFFERTORY PRAYER: Loving God, we offer these gifts. In some way, they may seem paltry in comparison to what Jesus offered - his whole life. But they represent our commitment to Jesus Christ, our church, and the world. Accept them in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

HYMN: "Be Thou My Vision" V.U. 642

COMMISSIONING: And now may God, who knows the secrets of our hearts, who loves us inside and out, through and through, be our source, guide, and destination as we continue our Lenten journey. May we know ourselves to be so touched by God's love that we will share that love with all we meet, and work for justice and for peace, for all of God's people.
